New Release version 3.0.0 [Aug. 31st, 2002|09:24 pm]

mirclj

[mart]

I've had quite a few people contact me in the last few months saying they would like to continue working on mIRC-LJ. For one or two of them, I sent them my half-finished version 2.4.0 release, but since this seems to be a common interest I thought I'd take the time to finish it up and make one last release.

This will be the last release from me for the forseeable future. Hopefully this will give those who are wanting to have a go at adding some of the things mIRC-LJ is missing a better starting point. The most notable change in 3.0.0 is that data encoding is now handled by an external DLL and thus is much faster than in previous versions. This, among other benefits, makes the “Automatically log on when mIRC starts” option perhaps less irritating. See the changelog at the bottom of the documentation file for a more complete list of changes since version 2.3.3, the last public release.

It's Christmas Day [Dec. 25th, 2001|01:06 am]

mirclj

[mart]

I bet you forgot about this newslog journal, huh? ;)

As tired as it's probably getting, I just want to wish the few people who actually use my freaky LJ client a Merry Christmas if they celebrate it. Also, happy aithiest-children-get-presents day.

In case you were curious, I'm not developing mIRC-LJ anymore. I might take it up again some day, but for now it's staying as it is. At least one person has made modifications to mIRC-LJ to add some feature I didn't get around to implementing, and everyone else is free to do the same. If they want to release their modifications, then all the better.

Have a good one, folks.

Another New Version [Jun. 29th, 2001|01:28 pm]

mirclj

[mart]

It came to my attention that mIRC-LJ's HTTP support was no longer working. I'm assuming it's an issue caused by the new load balancer (entirely my fault though, mIRC-LJ's HTTP handler was a kludge at best). I've rewritten it to be more robust, so it shouldn't break again unless a very drastic changes is made.

Vote for LiveJournal [Jun. 21st, 2001|10:51 am]

mirclj

[mart]

As you've probably noticed by now, LiveJournal has been trying to get users to vote for it in the 'Webby Awards' as a write-in candidate. The guy behind Blogger, Evan Williams, has recently got wind of this and pushed for Blogger users to vote for Blogger (a site which was already an option, rather than a write-in) to beat LiveJournal.

The people high up at LiveJournal, most notably Mark our 'All-things-business' manager, are very keen for LiveJournal, which wasn't even nominated, to beat Blogger on the write-in vote, where people are able to vote for sites which aren't already nominated.

If you'd like to show your appreciation for LiveJournal, as well as attracting publicity and therefore more users which may potentially pay for the service and fund future development, I encourage you to vote for LiveJournal in the personal site category write-in.

For more information, including Mark's views on why LiveJournal should win a Webbie, see the thread on the subject over in the LiveJournal Business Discussion Community.

mIRC-LJ site down [May. 29th, 2001|04:51 pm]

mirclj

[mart]

The server which contains, amongst other things, the mIRC-LJ site is currently down indefinitely. Until it returns, you will be unable to download mIRC-LJ from the mIRC-LJ site but it will work if you download from the LiveJournal server by both HTTP and FTP.

I'm going to contact my ISP shortly to find out when and if the server will be back up. Should they tell me it's gone for good, I'll be moving the site elsewhere.

Version 2.3.2 [May. 16th, 2001|04:15 pm]

mirclj

[mart]

The new version 2.3.2 fixes a minor bug that was present in all of the clients until now.

It also adds support for the priority server for paid users. The server will tell the client at login whether or not you are authorised to use the priority server, and if so.. well, you will.

Version 2.3.1 [Mar. 26th, 2001|01:24 am]

mirclj

[mart]

I've released version 2.3.1 this evening. The main new feature is the ability to insert lines from channels directly into posts, complete with escaping of HTML special characters. I think now mIRC-LJ is worth having for people who often post things from IRC even if they use LJ-Win32 or the Web client for other things, but that's really just my opinion!

I also fixed a small bug which at this time makes no difference whatsoever, but could do in the future. It always pays to be prepared! :)

    Quickies [Feb. 24th, 2001|02:06 pm]

    mirclj

    [mart]

Just a quick update... The latest version of mIRC-LJ (still 2.2.1) is available now on the LiveJournal FTP site and file area of the website (which are, in fact, the same thing.)

Check out the mIRC directory of the FTP site or the file area.

Brad has not yet sorted out the thing which will allow me to set the link on the download page to the correct filename, but I'm sure that will come with time.

Quick Note [Feb. 2nd, 2001|05:11 pm]

    mirclj

    [mart]

Due to the fact that I just did a quick flurry of revisions, there's some version confusion going on.

Version 2.2.0 is now on the LiveJournal Download page. This isn't the most current version, however, as 2.2.1 has since superseded it to provide the customisable output thing. 2.2.1 was revised at least three times since I originally mentioned it, so you might want to redownload it from the mIRC-LJ site to ensure you have the most recent version. (Remember to have mIRC closed when you replace livejournal.mrc)

There won't be any further revisions available on the LJ download page until BradFitz has set up the FTP server so client authors can upload their own stuff. I will therefore hold off making any more major releases until then. Minor releases (usually bugfix releases), if needed, will be advertised here only.

Once Brad has the FTP thing up and running, I'll upload whatever the latest version is at the time.

Small insignificant bug [Jan. 31st, 2001|03:52 pm]

    mirclj

    [mart]

I've identified a small bug in the checkfriends support in mIRC-LJ. The bug causes the checkfriends support to be activated even if login fails, and was caused by me putting the code to start the checking in slightly the wrong place. When your login is incorrect, it will attempt to initialise checking but since the username and password it sends are blank this will fail and checking won't continue. The only ill-effects from this will arise if you login too quickly after failing login and the connection to the LJ server is still open.

This small bug will be fixed in the next release, but I'm not going to do a minor release to fix it since it's not a big problem and most users will never even see the problem.

Update: I fixed the issue detailed above, and a few other minor things, as well as adding more configurable output since people asked for it. Version 2.2.1 is available now from the mIRC-LJ site, and will be sent to BradFitz at some point this evening.

If you have any problems with the new version, please reply to this post.

    mIRC-LJ v2.2.0 released [Jan. 30th, 2001|06:09 pm]

    mirclj

    [mart]

mIRC-LJ v2.2.0, complete with friends monitoring support, is now available from the mIRC-LJ site. It's also on its way to BradFitz for putting on the LiveJournal clients page.

There are no other new changes since version 2.1.0, but since friends page monitoring is optional it's a recommended upgrade even if you don't indend to use this feature.

Friends page monitoring [Jan. 30th, 2001|05:27 pm]

    mirclj

    [mart]

Right now I'm writing mIRC-LJ's friends page monitoring support, ready for inclusion in v2.2.0. This news entry will actually serve as a test post. :)

Look out for a release real soon now.

Version 2.1.0 available (sort of) [Jan. 11th, 2001|10:18 pm]

    mirclj

    [mart]

I've uploaded version 2.1.0 to the mIRC-LJ site. I'm not going to send it to BradFitz just yet, as he's busy with various things it seems. If you want the update, snag it from the mIRC-LJ site for now.

Version 2.1.0 is coming [Jan. 9th, 2001|11:37 pm]

    mirclj

    [mart]

Yesterday and tonight I worked on mIRC-LJ some. It started off being a really minor bugfix release (version number +0.0.1) but then I noticed some big stuff that was slightly odd about the old verson, and it became a minor release (+0.1).

I can't really be bothered to package it up and upload it though tonight, to be honest, so I'll do that tommorrow maybe. It fixes a few things that probably went unnoticed anyway, but deserved fixing such as it 'leaking' variables (it should be storing almost everything in its ini file now, but it was still letting some global variables leak out that shouldn't have been.) and also it wasn't sending the clientversion correctly, so it's not showing up in the stats or anyone's 'clients used' lists!

There is a larger problem which I've still not managed to fix. It won't cause any bother since I've worked around it, but I'd like to figure out what is going on. The protocol driver script on the server doesn't appear to be 'seeing' the first character of the stuff I'm sending, and this is what caused the missing clientversion problem. I've got around the problem by sending a meaningless variable at the start so its that that goes wrong, not the stuff the server wants to see... but that's not the best solution. My local faked protocol driver sees what I'm sending wholly, so I don't know what's going on. Any ideas people? :)

    Version 2.0.0 released [Nov. 22nd, 2000|10:59 pm]

    mirclj

    [mart]

Version 2.0.0 of mIRC-LJ is now available for download from the mIRC-LJ site, and soon it should be on the LiveJournal client download page.

Here's the new features list straight out of the docs:

    • Complete recode from scratch (other than the GUI!):
      • Now much more modular
      • More easily expandable to make addition of new features in the future easier.
    • Length limit bug fixed.
    • Now supports "Current Music" with auto-detection
    • "Strip Newlines" replaced by "Don't Autoformat", which sets the metadata flag rather than just removing the newlines at client-side.
    • Added support for disallowing comments to a specific entries.
    • Added HTTPinfo plugin

I decided not to implement the multiple userpic feature yet, but to wait until the mood selection stuff is implemented since they are related functions.

Music Detection [Nov. 20th, 2000|01:06 am]

    mirclj

    [mart]

In a spare hour I found this evening I did the music detection code for the Current Music feature. I changed the planned order slightly: It checks mIRC's internal mp3 support first, then WinAmp (if you install a special plugin for WinAmp so it can tell mIRC what it is playing), then mart!mp3 (mp3script for versions of mIRC before the internal mp3 support was added) and finally !mp3script and anything else that you can convince to store its track details in the %mp3file variable.

New LJ features [Nov. 19th, 2000|04:51 am]

    mirclj

    [mart]

    New todo list items:

    • Support multiple userpics. This one won't be too hard to implement in 2.0.0, but would have been hell to do in 1.x... such is life :)
    • Work out what's going on with those dynamic web menus (I'm not exactly sure what they are for yet) and possibly act on that. The word "recursive" in the protocol mode documentation makes me think that this might not happen since recursiveness in mIRCscript isn't nice.

2.0.0 already has support for not allowing comments to entries, so that doesn't need to be added.

A todo list of sorts [Nov. 15th, 2000|05:09 pm]

    mirclj

    [mart]

This is better. I now have access to post here from my own account! :)

mIRC client is coming in a few weeks, hopefully. No time to do anything to it this week, but hopefully next weekend I'll get the remaining features implemented and get a proper release done.

Features that are planned but not yet implemented include:

    • Music auto-detection, using mIRC's internal mp3 player, my own mp3 script, and finally WinAmp if an appropriate WinAmp plugin is installed.
    • Proxy support: it's been a long time coming.

The beta of 2.0.0 is still available on the mIRC-LJ site.

Beta version, baby! [Oct. 27th, 2000|09:40 pm]

There is a beta version of v2.0.0 on the site now. It is pretty much complete, although the music detection code isn't in there yet.

If you decide to try it, please let me know of any bugs, odd things or troubles you find when using it. Also note that the documentation hasn't been entirely updated for this new version yet, so some things in it may be outdated.

Client Log, earthdate 20001027 [Oct. 27th, 2000|06:59 pm]

I thought I'd make this account, because writing mIRC client stuff in my personal LiveJournal was a little odd.

Whenever something significant happens to the mIRC client, I'll write about it here.
